Many people at one time or another think about selling items at auction. These may be people who have inherited an estate and do not know what to do with that inheritance. Others are in the process of downsizing. Perhaps they are moving into assisted living or into a smaller home and do not have room for all the items they’ve collected over the years. Others just need to clean out their garage, basement or attic. Still others are tired of paying for a storage unit to store items they’ll never use. Some realize they have a lot of items they no longer need and would like to sell them.
There are other options than auctions. One option would be to have a yard sale. Some people enjoy hosting yard sales; other people think they are too much hassle. Selling online such as on E-bay is an option, but that can be a little intimidating for the first-time seller. It can be even more of a hassle than a yard sale with the posting of pictures, writing out a description of the items and then having to package the items that sell and take them to the post office. Many now sell on the various Buy-Sell-Trade sites available, but that often results in people not showing up at agreed meeting sites resulting in wasted time and gas. Each person just needs to decide for himself or herself if these other options are a better choice than selling at auction.
People who have never sold at auction often have a lot of questions about the process. I’ve tried to address them here.
