Today I am launching a new blog that will focus on small business, leadership, entrepreneurship and keep people informed about my auction business.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Dennis Bickers. I have another blog at http://bivocationalminis
try.blogspot.com/ which is written primarily for persons serving in smaller and bivocational churches. For twenty years I served a small church in southeast Indiana as a bivocational pastor. During that time I worked in a factory, graduated from a Bible college, earned my bachelor’s degree, and owned and managed a small business. After 30 years of working for Cummins Engine Company I took early retirement but continued serving as pastor and managing a heating and air conditioning business our family owned. In 2001 I was asked to accept a new ministry position with our region and decided to accept that opportunity. I recently retired from that position. Oh, before I forget, in 2016 my wife and I will be married 50 years. We have two children and seven grandchildren
I’ve published eight books, all dealing with small church and bivocational ministry. Those books have led to numerous speaking opportunities throughout the US and Canada. In addition, I’ve published an e-book on business that is based on my experience as a small business owner. The book is entitled Mistakes: Avoiding the Wrong Decisions That Will Close Your Small Business. That book is available for either Kindle or NOOK and is available for only $4.99.
Our business had been very profitable under the previous owner for many years, but a series of poor decisions and poor leadership on my part caused the company to begin to go in the wrong direction. When the US economy tanked the company could not survive. It would be easy to blame the economy, but the fact is that many small businesses did not fail when the economy failed. It’s also a fact that many small businesses fail when the economy is strong. It has to do with leadership and good decision making by those in leadership. The failure of our company taught me many valuable lessons that I share in the book. Learning those lessons cost me a business. You can learn them for $4.99. It’s your choice.
Now, I’ve started a new business as an auctioneer. I continue to preach when I have the opportunity, and I’m scheduled to lead a series of conferences in 2016 so I don’t want people to think I’ve left the ministry. But, I’m also looking forward to building my auction business, and I know I won’t make the same mistakes with this business that I made before.
I hope you’ll find this blog helpful and will decide to follow me. You can also follow me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/dennis.bickers and on Twitter @DennisBickers. Feel free to jump in and comment on my posts and ask questions. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
